Beyond the Couch: Why We’re Bringing Neuro-Affirming Therapy to Phoenix Fan Fusion

When people think of "therapy," they often picture a quiet office and a clinical clipboard. But at Unlocked Self Counseling, we believe that healing and growth happen wherever you feel most like yourself. For many in the neurodivergent community, that "safe harbor" is found in the worlds of gaming, pop culture, and creative storytelling.

That’s why this year, Jeremy Gwizdalski, LPC, is heading to Phoenix Fan Fusion to host a series of interactive panels designed to celebrate, educate, and "unlock" the potential of the neurodivergent community.

Why Pop Culture and Neurodiversity?

For individuals with ADHD, Autism, or Dyslexia, traditional social environments can feel like navigating a world without a map. However, fandoms—whether it’s the structured rules of Dungeons & Dragons or the deep lore of a favorite anime—provide a common language. These "special interests" aren't just hobbies; they are powerful tools for building social confidence, emotional regulation, and a sense of belonging.

What to Expect: Our Fan Fusion Panels

Our panels aren't just lectures; they are interactive experiences. We want participants to move from passive listeners to active creators of their own narrative.

1. Neurodivergent Bingo

This isn’t your typical game night. We use Bingo to gamify the shared experiences of the ND community. It’s a lighthearted, high-energy way to validate the "quirks" that are actually common neurodivergent traits, helping participants realize they aren't alone—they’re part of a massive, vibrant community.

2. In Another World: If Everyone Was Neurodivergent

In this thought experiment, we flip the script. Most of our clients spend their lives "masking" to fit into a neurotypical world. In this panel, we imagine a society built by and for neurodivergent brains. What would the schools look like? How would we communicate? It’s a powerful way to shift the perspective from "deficit" to "design."

3. The Neurodivergent Dungeons & Dragons Campaign

Tabletop RPGs like D&D are the ultimate laboratory for social skills. Jeremy leads sessions that focus on:

  • Safe Failure: Learning that a "natural 1" isn't the end of the world.

  • Executive Function: Managing character sheets and turn orders.

  • Empathy & Roleplay: Practicing social interactions in a low-stakes, fantasy environment.

Bridging the Gap

While Fan Fusion is about fun and community, the "keys" we use there are the same ones we use at Unlocked Self Counseling PLLC. Whether Jeremy is using Play Therapy with a child or helping a teen navigate social anxiety, the goal remains the same: Unlocking potential through understanding.

If you’re attending Phoenix Fan Fusion, come say hi! And if you’re looking to bring that same level of creative, neuro-affirming care into your family's life, we’re here to help.
